Parking Lot # 3: Swoosh Rock

The “Swoosh”

Another unexpected pleasure found near Parking Lot # 3 is a fascinating unnamed rock formation. It’s doubtful you’ll find it marked on any map.

If you’ve ever visited Nevada’s oldest state park, Valley of Fire, east of Las Vegas Nevada USA, this geologic wonder is just a few feet off a main paved road, yet it’s unlikely most folks have ever seen it.

Part of it is even briefly visible as you fly right past it going somewhere else.

I simply call it “Swoosh Rock” because of a distinctive Nike-like “Swoosh” embedded in the ground next to it.

Only time tested, battle-scarred, wilderness landscape pros like me know of this place. 😉

Here is Swoosh Rock in all its wide-angled glory. The Nike swoosh is embedded flat on the ground at the bottom of this image. From here behind me, it’s no more than 20 feet to the paved road.

Folks miss seeing this little gem because it’s mostly blocked by a small berm between the road and the rock. Driving past you just catch a glimpse of the top of the rock. The swoosh is totally obscured in a nearly flat spot in front of the rock.

Here are other views at Swoosh Rock…

It’s a weighty obligation to take on the awesome responsibility for recording dwindling world class photo opportunities left remaining in wilderness lands of the western United States… but someone has to do it!
